Finding our Reason for Being

If you were made to be a coffee maker, make coffee. Don’t try to keep things cold or squeeze juice.

Is There a Purpose?

Are we created with purpose? What are the first steps and foundation thinking to becoming a “doer”?

Epistle (Jan. ‘10)

A monthly letter to our partner church addressing some for the coming year.

Feb. Epistle to FWPC

26 January 2010

February is upon us already, and things are moving at speeds unimaginable. Days click off at a rapid pace, and it is all I can do to keep up. In my monthly letter to you guys, I am going to do something I have rarely done up to this point – ask you to be a part of something Missional that H.11 is setting out to accomplish. Beginning June 25 and running until July 11, I will be leading a team consisting of myself and three other creative artisans to Thailand. We will be conducting an English camp... (more...)

Picture this: You wake up in the morning. It was a rough night; maybe you were out with friends doing the things friends do, maybe the baby was crying all night, or maybe you just lie awake every night worrying and wondering what tomorrow will bring and commiserating over another wasted day. Whatever the reason, you NEED coffee. So, you do the most obvious thing, you walk over to the machine made to help you produce coffee. You fill the pot, pour it in the top, place the grounds in the provided area,... (more...)

Is There a Purpose?

1 January 2010

Is There a Purpose? Purpose – n. something set up as an object or end to be attained Etymology: Middle English purpos, from Anglo-French, from purposer to intend, propose, from Latin proponere (perfect indicative proposui) to propose Date: 14th century Thanks to Rick Warren’s super-selling book, The Purpose Driven Life, PURPOSE has become somewhat of a trite word these days – viewed with rolled eyes and scoffing, condescending intonations. It’s like that with all things in a world of cynics.... (more...)

Epistle (Jan. ‘10)

21 December 2009

May this letter find you embracing a New Year of possibilities in a life enveloped by the grace, love, and responsibility in our King, Christ Jesus. From H.11, I send you the warmest wishes and prayers going forward. This year could indeed be one to remember if we all resolve to be the person and communities God has called us to be – to do all the things we have been called to do no matter the cost, no matter how far out of our comfortable lives it draws us. We were created for something more. I... (more...)

Epistles (Dec. 09)

28 November 2009

These are letters I write for the monthy newsletter of our partnering church. I decided to post them on the website as well. Last month I spoke from my heart about a couple of things, but this month I am going to give you a precursor to what will be my State of the Church address to H.11 in January. First off, I would like to thank all of you at First Westminster Presbyterian Church for your generosity and hospitality. For those of you who don’t know, FWPC has graciously been letting us hold... (more...)

On this Thanksgiving that has so much meaning for me, Nathan, I give you all, friends; seekers; and those inquiring spirits, the gift of Cash. Few people said things with as much heart, soul, and clarity than Johnny Cash. Here is his Thanksgiving prayer.  Read More →

A lot of people think about what they, “want to be.” What I am finding is that it is more important to occassionally assess and reflect on what, “we are becoming.” What are you becoming based on your decisions and habits vs. where or what you want to become?  Read More →

What are you most thankful for during the autumn season? What is your favorite thing during the autumn season? What beauty of autumn makes you most stand in awe?  Read More →

I was watching this clip the other day when I needed a laugh, and I began to think about how often this very type of thing happens in our conversations about God, faith, and what it means to live a “Christian life.” I’m sure we’ve all had the experience. The conversation begins straightforward enough. You’re both on the same page, but somewhere along the timeline of the conversation, something happens. Suddenly, it doesn’t appear as if either of you knows what... (more...)

Of Masks and Monsters

31 October 2009

It’s All Hallows Eve. True the holiday has a not-so-nice history, but with a set of guidelines and limits, I have consented to candy and costumes … my wife was pretty adamant; you pick your battles. When my daughter and my wife team up, it is pretty much game over for me and my will — way too cute, way too smart. So now, here I sit, ready to go out for candy with a “hallowreena” (think a ballerina in purples, oranges, and makeup); a son dressed up as Dumbo (he loves... (more...)
